After a family dinner, I sat at the table with my
father-in-law, Darrell, drinking coffee. He rarely talked about his own father;
but this afternoon, he told a humorous and touching story about football, a
marching band, rain, mud, car heaters, and the love of his father. We laughed.
I told a similar story about my late father.
The next day, it occurred to me that Darrell has been a father
to me for 30 years. When I need help or advice, I turn to him.
Like Jethro, who influenced his son-in-law, Moses, Darrell
has influenced me through his caring encouragement and gentle guidance. He is
an example of God’s grace in my life, and I am learning that God’s grace is
more than sufficient for me.
God sends people into our lives to bless us and to
strengthen us. When we listen for God’s voice speaking through them, we can
grow into the children of God we were meant to be.
