Romans 5:3-5 (ESV) 3 Not
only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces
endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces
hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has
been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
James 1:2-4 (ESV) 2 Count
it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for
you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And
let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and
complete, lacking in nothing
1 Peter 4:12-13 (ESV)
12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it
comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But
rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also
rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
Some suffering is caused by the workings of natural law.
There is no moral judgment involved--natural law is blind, and God does not interfere
with it. God does not intervene to save good people from earthquake or disease,
and does not send these misfortunes to punish the wicked. Kushner puts great
value on the orderliness of the universe's natural law, and would not want God
to routinely intervene for moral reasons. (Taken From When Bad Things Happen To Good
People)
