Psalm 23:2 He
makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
Revelation 7:17 For
the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; 'he will lead them
to springs of living water.' 'And God will wipe away every tear from their
eyes.
'"
Isaiah 49:10 They
will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down
on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside
springs of water.
Ezekiel 34:14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.
Ezekiel 34:14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.
We are eternal creatures. We ask eternal
questions. Where did I come from? Where am I going? Is there life
after death? These are the primal questions of the soul. And if left
unanswered, such questions steal our rest.
Only one other living creature has as much trouble resting
as we do. Not dogs…they doze. Cats invented the catnap. Most animals know
how to rest—with one exception. These creatures are woolly, simpleminded,
and slow. Sheep! Sheep can’t sleep. For them to do so everything must
be just right. No tension in the flock…no hunger in the belly…everything
has to be just so. Unfortunately sheep cannot find safe pasture or find
food. They need help. They need a shepherd to lead them, and help them to lie
down in green pastures. Without a shepherd they can’t rest. Without a
Shepherd, neither can we!
